April 10th

Today we did not have to get up early so we were allowed to sleep in until 8:00am. Wahoo!

We went to Beaumont-Hamel - sight of the Newfoundland Memorial to the battle that took place for them on July 1, 1916.

We then headed of to Ypres for some free time and to witness the Menin Gate Ceremony - it is done every night at 8:00 - this has been done since 1928. Here is where Mrs. Crawford has a Great-Uncle listed. His name is Robert Dowd of the Manitoba Regiment of the 8th Battalion.

We had a small ceremony for you Sandra.

I am also placing some more pics of our events.

Tomorrow we are off to Normandy where it will be a big day for Elizabeth Dakers. SHe has 2 Great-Uncles buried in the same cemetery - Beny sur Mer. Watch for pics of that later.

  1. Wow. Thanks Mr.Kissick and students. Someday I hope to go there myself. My great-aunt, his youngest sister, used to tell me about when Robert and his brother Charles told their ailing, bedridden father (my great grandfather) that they had enlisted. "Father turned his face to the wall and wept".
